See the craft in action

The best way to understand what we do is to see it. Below are the kinds of edits we make every day, and just as important, the reasoning behind each one.

01

The opening line

A future pre-med student's personal statement.

Before

Ever since I was young, I have always been passionate about medicine and helping others. Volunteering at the hospital taught me many valuable lessons about hard work and dedication.

After

The first time I watched a nurse fail to find a vein, I counted her breaths, not the patient's. She stayed calm on the fourth try. I decided that night that calm was a skill, and that I wanted it.

Editor's note: The 'before' could be anyone's. The 'after' drops us into one specific moment, gives the student a point of view, and turns a cliché ('I want to help people') into a concrete want ('I want that skill'). Same student, same experience, but now there's a person on the page.

02

Cutting the performance

A supplemental essay about a robotics project.

Before

As I gazed upon the culmination of countless sleepless nights, my heart swelled with an indescribable, effervescent joy that words could scarcely capture in their limited capacity.

After

It worked. After three months, the arm lifted the cup, set it down, and didn't spill. I laughed out loud in an empty lab at 2 a.m.

Editor's note: The 'before' is a student performing 'good writing,' piling on adjectives to sound impressive. The 'after' trusts the moment. 'I laughed out loud in an empty lab at 2 a.m.' shows the joy the first version only claimed. Concrete beats ornate, every time.

03

Show, then tell

A Common App essay about a grandparent.

Before

My grandmother taught me the importance of patience and tradition, values that have shaped who I am today and continue to guide me.

After

My grandmother measured flour with her palm, never a cup. 'The hand remembers,' she said. It took me years to understand she wasn't talking about baking.

Editor's note: The 'before' tells us the lesson and stops. The 'after' shows a vivid, specific image, then lands one quiet line of reflection that means more because the image earned it. Scene first, insight second: that rhythm is where an essay actually thinks.

04

The ending that resonates

Closing lines of an essay about immigrating.

Before

This experience taught me resilience and adaptability, qualities that I will carry with me as I embark on the next chapter of my life at your university.

After

I still mix up my tenses when I'm tired. I used to be embarrassed. Now I think of it as proof: that I built a second self, in a second language, from scratch.

Editor's note: The 'before' is a summary that could end any essay. The 'after' returns to a small, true detail (mixing up tenses) and reframes it as quiet pride. Endings shouldn't restate the essay. They should leave the reader with one image they won't forget.
