The Difference

Same story. Sharper telling.

We never change what happened to you. We change how it lands on the page. Here's a real kind of edit: an opening line, before and after.

Before

“Ever since I was young, I have always been passionate about medicine and helping others. Volunteering at the hospital taught me many valuable lessons about hard work and dedication.”

Generic opening, abstract claims, nothing only this student could say.

After

“The first time I watched a nurse fail to find a vein, I counted her breaths, not the patient's. She stayed calm on the fourth try. I decided that night that calm was a skill, and that I wanted it.”

A specific moment, a real voice, a turn only this writer could make.

Give it a shape that carries the reader.

03

Make it sound like you at your sharpest.

04

Polish

Earn every word.

Sophia Li

Meet the writer

Hi, I'm Sophia.

I'm a published writer and longtime editor, now at Harvard. Before this I founded a national literary magazine for teen writers and spent years helping young writers find their voice. Verse Prep is where I do that for students facing the blank page of a college essay: I help you find the one story only you can tell, and tell it well.

Testimonials

What our students say

My editor found the one paragraph buried in the middle that was actually my whole story, and rebuilt the essay around it. I never would have seen it. That's the difference between an editor and a writer.

Alex M.

Accepted to Stanford, Columbia, Duke

I thought my essay was done. It came back with the same story but a completely different feel: tighter, truer, more like me. The margin notes taught me why every change made it stronger.

Priya K.

Accepted to MIT, Carnegie Mellon

They cut my favorite sentence, and they were right. It was showing off, not telling my story. That kind of honest, expert eye is exactly what I was paying for.

Jordan L.

Accepted to Yale, UPenn

English isn't my first language and I was scared my voice would get 'corrected' away. Instead they made it sound more like me, not less. I cried reading the final version.

Chloe W.

Accepted to Princeton

The opening line they helped me write is the reason I believe I got in. It made a tired reader stop and pay attention. Worth every dollar.

David S.

Accepted to Harvard, Brown

Every supplemental came back with a clear reason behind each edit. It didn't feel like someone fixing my work. It felt like learning to write from someone who really knows how.

Accepted to Dartmouth, Georgetown

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How does the essay editing process work?
You submit your essay and its prompt, choose your turnaround, and pay securely online. Your editor works through every line using The Verse Method and returns your essay with in-line edits, margin notes, and a candid summary of what's working and what to sharpen.
Will you write my essay for me?
No, and you wouldn't want us to. Admissions officers can spot writing that isn't yours. We're editors, not ghostwriters: we sharpen, cut, and shape, but the voice and ideas on the page stay yours. That's the whole point.
What makes you different from other admissions help?
Verse Prep is writing-first. Most admissions help is strategy and statistics; here the focus is the craft of the sentence and the story, because the essay is the one part of your application you fully control. Your editor is a published writer who studied at Harvard and edits essays for a living.
How fast will I get my essay back?
You choose at checkout, from a standard turnaround up to a 24-hour rush for deadline crunches. These are maximum delivery times; we often return work earlier.
How do revisions work?
Every edit comes back with in-line changes, margin notes, and a summary. From there, you revise using our feedback and send it back, and we take another pass to make sure it's landing. Single essays include two revision rounds; the Complete bundle includes unlimited rounds until each essay is right. It's a back-and-forth with your writer, not a one-time drop.
Do you cover supplemental essays and short answers?
Yes. We edit Common App personal statements, every supplemental a top school asks for, the UC personal insight questions, and short-answer responses. You can buy per-school supplemental packages or a single essay.
Is my writing kept confidential?
Completely. We never publish, share, or reuse any student's work. Your essays are yours alone.

Let's make your essay unforgettable.
